Comfort Movies or Series
What Exactly Is a Comfort Show?
It's exactly what it sounds like! The kind of media that makes you feel at ease
Usually, it's a movie or series where you already know the ending or the plot twists. When you watch it, you don't feel anxious or anticipate surprises... your brain isn't waiting to see what happens next because you already know... that familiarity brings comfort.
I've been trying to get back into movies and series lately, but I seem to lack the energy to start something new. Over the past 6-7 months, basically since the second half of 2025 I've felt like there are better things to do than watching shows. Maybe that's true, or maybe it's just where I am right now.
Back to the topic at hand, my two favorite comfort series are both anime.
The first one is Barakamon, follows a young Japanese calligrapher who gets sent to a countryside island after punching an art curator in a fit of anger. That's my badly simplified version, anyway. The series is warm, gentle, and endlessly rewatchable.
And the second one is Overlord, an isekai (transported to another world) anime with a slightly edgy premise. The protagonist is a guy who becomes a skeleton overlord in a game world, pretending to be supremely competent while actually feeling uncertai. It's built on a series of comedic misunderstandings that he just rolls with.
Well, they're both animes, so maybe I should have titled this "Comfort Anime" instead of "Comfort Movies or Series." Though to be fair, anime can be either format anyway.
